The wild boar (Sus scrofa) population density is increasing worldwide, leading to a higher contact rate among animal hosts. The knowledge of diseases circulating in wildlife populations is important for wild species conservation, livestock production and for public health. In this paper the Author reports the wild boar health status evaluated within a monitoring program of wildlife diseases implemented in Emilia-Romagna region, Italy. Samples from 54,802 wild boars were collected during 6 hunting seasons. No antibodies against CSFV were detected, while the ADV prevalence rates were 31.9%, 35.2%, 21.6%, 31.3%, 31.7% and 27.5% in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively. Seroprevalence to Toxoplasma gondii was 16.7% and Trichinella spp. larvae were detected in 1 out of 54,801 wild boars. The parasite was identiied as T. pseudospiralis by multiplex PCR. The monitoring plan showed the circulation of Brucella suis biovar 2 in the regional wild boar population and the absence of Mycobacterium bovis. In this paper the results of other wild boar monitoring plans are reviewed and compared.
